[Skye’s noticed the way Bucky lightens up anytime he talks about Steve, or his family, and it’s really sweet.]
What did food even cost back then? A nickel?
[Her knowledge of the past was limited enough as is, but she finds herself fascinated by it whenever Bucky brings up his own past. Which may or may not be solely because it’s him and not a boring history lesson being taught at school.]
Are you talking about Nathan’s? I think that might be the only thing to still exist from your time.
[It’s a joke, obviously, but a lot of things have changed since the 40s. After the waiter comes to take their order, Skye rests her arms on the table and leans closer, clearly engaged in whatever his answer may be to her question.]
You know what? Sometimes it did cost a nickel. It took me a while to get the hang of money now because of all the sticker shock.
[ he's still pretty frugal most of the time, but not when it comes to spending money on other people. ]
Sam moved in with me. He's making us get a new couch, though. I guess goat bites don't fit in with his taste in home decor.
[ there's a huge grin as he says it. He knows the couch was a disaster but it hadn't mattered as much when it was just him. He'd even kissed Skye for the first time on that couch. ]
At least here money doesn’t seem to mean a whole lot, so that’s something.
[Oh god, they’re talking about money. Since when was Skye ever this adult? Thankfully Bucky moves the subject, and she can’t quite hide the confused expression on her face.]
Who’s Sam?
[That smile of Bucky’s could melt ice cream. Smiling sheepishly, Skye looks down at the table for a few seconds because she can imagine what is causing him to smile like that.]
Yeah, well, as crummy as that couch was, I gotta admit that I’ll miss it.
Wait, you don't know the legendary Avenger Birdman?
[ Even when he's got no bet on the table, he can't help the potshot at Sam. The guy's moved in with him and they still bicker like emotionally stunted siblings. ]
But he's the strongest, coolest Avenger according to him.
[Skye laughs, despite being confused because she has no idea who he’s referring to.]
No. Can’t say that I do.
[Is this one of those weird moments where their timelines don’t match up and he knows way more than she does about their world? Cause she can’t say she’s a big fan of that.]
Sounds like you must like the guy if you’re living together.
[Even if he’s very clearly making fun of him when he isn’t here to hear it.]
He's fine, but if you ever tell him I said that, I'll deny it.
[ It's a little too easy to forget the time discrepancy. They don't talk about their lives back home enough for it to come up and when it does, it's always a little jarring to remember. ]
[ He lets the P pop as he grins at her. It's nice to see her like this, a little flustered but happy. There's something in Bucky that always wants to find ways to make the people he cares about smile. ]
[In an attempt to try and be less flustered before speaking up again, Skye reaches for her glass of water and takes a nice long sip from it.
The rest of their time at the restaurant feels as though it’s gone by too quickly because suddenly the bill has been paid and they’re exiting the restaurant. Far from drunk, but feeling pleasently buzzed, Skye looks down at their hands and brushes her hand against his before attempting to lace her fingers through his.]
I kind of don’t want this date to end.
[She admits this while still very much looking down, and only after the words have left her lips does she finally lift her gaze to try and read his reaction. Does he feel the same way or is he ready to just go home by himself?]
[ Bucky takes her hand of course. He feels very much the same. Time with Skye is easy, even with this new component. They laugh and they have fun and he'd like to think they understand each other well and since it doesn't have to end before they're ready, he walks her home, too, and then he joins her inside.
The next morning he wakes up sprawled in a bed that smells nicer than his own. He shifts and moves a little closer to the warm body next to him with a sleepy smile, but it takes a moment for him to open his eyes and then he has to free himself of some hair in his face that could belong to either of them before he finds Skye under the sheets next to him. ]
[Smiling sheepishly when Bucky turns to face her, Skye lifts her head up just enough so that she can move all of her hair over to the side instead of literally in his face.]
Hey.
[She hadn’t been awake much longer than him, but she had been replaying everything that had happened last night in her head. Skye often acts before thinking and then freaks out about it later, except this time. She has absolutely no regrets, in fact, she’s surprised they haven’t done that sooner. Last night just felt right. Eyes flickering briefly to his lips, Skye lifts her gaze to meet his.]
Last night was nice.
[Clearly, because she can’t stop smiling right now.]
[ He shifts a little closer, careful to make sure that it isn't his metal arm he wraps around her middle when he leans in to kiss her cheek. His smile matches hers. If Wakanda gave him a chance to start to heal, his life here has let him go one step further. He has a life here, even if it's a strange, sometimes frightening sort of life. A year ago, the idea of sleeping with someone had felt like a long lost memory, but now he can't help reveling in the closeness. ]
Few more minutes.
[ Eyes closing, he presses his face into her shoulder and hums. It's not like he's really planning to go back to sleep, but he wants to enjoy this a little longer. ]
[Giggling like a fool when he presses a kiss against her cheek, Skye turns into him and wraps an arm around him as well to keep him close to her. Resting her chin on the top of his head as he rests his face on her shoulder, Skye runs her fingertips up and down his back slowly.]
I’m okay with never leaving this bed again.
[Especially if he stays here with her. Maybe this should feel weird, but it doesn’t, which is why Skye feels the need to say...]
We should’ve done that a lot sooner.
[It’s a little easier to admit that when he’s not looking at her.]

[Toying with her napkin, Skye gives a vague shrug in response, but the smile never leaves her face.]
Not really. Well, except for this one guy who asked me out on date.
[Skye leans in a little closer, lowering her voice a little as if she’s afraid of others over hearing her.]
Which, if I’m being honest, I’ve kind of been hoping for a little while now that he would.

[ He taps her foot again under the table and winks, because this is what she's stuck with now: a huge fucking nerd. ]

Skye breathes out a laugh, shaking her head in response to his accusation.]
Yeah? What couldn’t he see?
