[it's still ridiculously early, though he's long since slipped out of bucky's bed to head out for his run. but barely half an hour in to it, and steve had ended up giving up completely. there's only so long he can avoid dealing with this, and as long as he still has his contracts with bucky and caitlin, the knows he needs to pay attention to those twenty-four hours.
well, ten hours, now.
...they're going to hate him when they find out.]
Hey, Buck. Sorry if I woke you up.
I just got a call from a friend who needs my help with something, and it might take a while. I don't know how long exactly yet, but it's going to leave me out of contact till we're done.
[and he knows he should probably leave it at that. they're already going in circles, and it'll only get worse. but if things do end up going badly today, there's one thing he needs to say. that he wants bucky to know--]
I love you, alright? In every possible way. So I'm not going to lose you over something like this.
[ Bucky isn't even sure how to answer at first. It feels like Steve's message hits him like a ton of bricks. It's too much and not enough and it only makes Bucky more scared that something will happen. ]
I love you, too. I'm not going to lose you for anything.
[whether bucky realizes it or not, those words are something he really needs to hear right now. it's enough to make him reaffirm his decision to hand himself in. to not fight his citation.
he can't risk bucky being pulled in to the middle of all this.]
When this is all over and I can come back, I'll tell you everything.
Look after Caitlin for me too, okay?
[because guess who hasn't actually...told her he's going.]
[which only helps reiterate the point to him that this really is the best way to manage the situation. if bucky's worrying over him going to "help a friend", who knows how it would've gone if he told him the truth.]
Buck, I'll call you the second I can. Just don't do anything stupid while I'm gone.

Sorry for dropping this on you like this.

[ Because if Steve's doing something dangerous, he'd better take Bucky. ]

[ Bucky might be out of the game, but he still has his gun and he knows how to use it. ]

But you're not going to get in to a fight here, Buck. That's the last thing I want.
[because the possible consequences really aren't worth the risk]
