[he has to take a moment at that. a moment to process just what bucky's really saying beneath it all. it helps to alleviate some of that guilt he still feels for their two designations and just how much trouble its caused so far. marked or not, they're equals, as far as steve's concerned.]

I don't know. I think we'd both wear a collar for Peggy if she told us to.

[ He can't help laughing at that. It's true, of course. ]

She's a hell of a woman, isn't she? You're both pretty special.

Could say the same about you two. I think I'm the luckiest guy alive to get to be with you both.

[no matter the capacity. which is a thought that has him...turning a little quieter. more nervous]

I know you two have gotten closer. So...I need you to know that- I mean- If you and Peg... [huff. why is this so difficult to say?]

I wouldn't...be angry.

... Okay.

[ Because that's a lot of information. This is different from Caitlin, but then Bucky knows he feels an awful lot for Peggy at this point, too. It's not what he feels for Steve and not what Steve feels for her, but its own thing built on trust and fondness that she can't quite reciprocate as easily without memories of El Nysa. It's okay, though. Bucky will just feel what he feels and have the backs of the people who matter most to him. ]

Okay, good. 'Cause I wouldn't want you to be angry. Or sad or anything else like that. You matter too much. You both do.

I'm pretty sure that there's nothing you could do that'd make me angry.

[annoyed, sure. but as stubborn as he may be, he knows he'll never really be able to hold anything against bucky. they wouldn't have survived this long together if he did.]

Just don't take that as a reason to try. You two cause enough trouble as it is.

[look. he still hasn't forgiven them for getting themselves arrested]

Well I'm not gonna sit back and let either of you get into trouble without me.

[ It's a promise, because Bucky can't see not having either of their backs in a fight. He'll watch over them and keep them safe and if he can't do that, then he'll face the danger with them, because it's what he knows how to do. ]

And you've got a big mouth and she likes to look for danger, so I guess you'll just have to deal with it.

If that's your excuse for last time, you're going to have to try a little harder than that.

[not that either of them really need his forgiveness. sure, this city may force designations on them all. but he doesn't own either of them. bucky and peggy are still their own people, and he'll never try to enforce any level of control over them.

he'll just...continue to be annoyed about the fact they were caught in the first place.]

Still waiting on you to make it up to me.

You know there's not much I wouldn't do for you, Rogers.

[ Walking the fine line between fondness and innuendo, because Bucky very much means it in both of those ways. ]

[when he responds, his voice is much quieter. fond in a way that seems to be reserved for bucky alone.]

I do. Still don't know what I did to deserve you though.

[but that's a conversation they've had so many times already that he doesn't see a reason to push for more. so instead, there's the sounds of rustling as he starts putting a few things away.]

Are you working today?

[ Bucky scoffs. Steve may refuse to see what an amazing person he is, but Bucky will never stop seeing it. He makes Bucky want to be better, too, sometimes. Bucky figures he could inspire anyone if he put his mind to it. ]

I was working this morning, but I'm finished for the day.

Good.

[and that'd be the sound of a door closing. it's time to make his way back for part two of this conversation.]

Don't go disappearing on me.

Where did you think I'm going without dragging you along?

[ he laughs because he's done running from Steve. He's done leaving him behind or being left. That's in the past. ]

Nowhere, if I have my way.

[here or back home, he isn't giving up bucky again. losing him once was enough for a lifetime]

I'd like it if you were...waiting for me. In our bedroom.

[ Bucky groans. There's something about hearing things like that from Steve that is just completely intoxicating. Maybe it's on the fact that he knows Steve doesn't really want him to foo things he doesn't want to do. Following an order that's really more of a gentle suggestion from someone he trusts is so different from an order from someone else. He likes that reminder of his own freedom now. ]

I can do that. Hope you're fling you make it worth my while, though.

I suppose you'll just have to wait and see.

[and considering he's still trying to work up the nerve to ask a certain question, he's also trying to buy a little more time. not that it'll help]

Should be back in about ten minutes. Think you can wait that long?

No.

[ The answer's a little petulant, but then Bucky's also not entirely sure that he wants to wait. Maybe he should get started without Steve. ]

You'll have to hurry.

[it's at times like this that he's reasonably sure that bucky's trying to kill him]

Maybe you should give me a good reason to rush.

[never mind that his request is enough to have steve pick up his pace a little anyway]

You want me to tie a bow on myself?

[ There's the sound of fabric rustling as he undresses and stretches out on the bed. He's got no problem playing to the microphone for Steve. ]

I prefer you as you are. Don't need you wrapped up for me.

[the fact bucky's so easy on the eyes doesn't go unnoticed though]

...I want you to start though. Might even reward you if you're able to last till I get there.

Mmm what kind of reward are we talking?

[ Though Bucky knows he'll be happy with any sort of reward from Steve. He'd even be happy to have Steve watch him while he puts on a show. ]

The kind that involves a lot less clothing.

[amongst other things. though while he'd like to keep it a surprise, he's pretty sure he'd end up backing out if he tried to bring it up when they're face to face again.]

There's...something I want to try.

[ there's a low chuckle. ]

Well I can't have any less clothing than what I've already got on now.

[ His breath hitches. ]

What are you thinking?

[there's silence on his end for a while, though it's clear he's still there. it's just a little more difficult to get the words out than he'd like.]

I'm thinking that there are certain things we haven't done together yet. That...I haven't done at all. And I know you've been letting me take it slow, and I love you for it. But I think I'm ready to try something...more?

[just don't make him say it. especially not when he's about to get on to a crowded lift]

Yeah? You've got my interest, Rogers.

[ And Bucky knows he shouldn't promise anything because it'll just feed into Steve's worry that Bucky isn't really on board, but there's so much he wants to do with Steve, even some things he's never done, either, because Steve is different. He's not just a cute face Bucky met in a bar and what he is, well, Bucky doesn't even have the right words in all the languages he speaks. ]

I know we should probably talk it over first, but--

[there's a sudden rise in ambient sounds as steve enters the lift, and he only mutters a quiet "hold on" down the phone as he waits for them to reach the up. it's only once he's able to move away from the crowd that he finally speaks again.]

I want to take things further. I want you to show me what you like.
